"Oh aye, I's gettin' yer now, cart'll not be seen in t'lean ter. I's got ter go put Sparky ter bed and check on t'beasts. Any'un wants ter come along of me them's welcome". Ren was relaxing now that she was back in familiar surroundings with all the members of the community going about their duties. She watched Lucky fingering the polythene. "What's that yer saying pet? Who'm talking ter yer?" she asked.

"The seedlings" Lucky whispered as if scared to drown out their voices, "They are dying." She looks up at Renn, "Can I go in? I can help"

"Them's dyin'?" asked Ren. "'Ow so? Them was fine afore I went ter market, I were gonner put 'un in t'crop 'ouse in a day or so, what ails 'em? Yer get on in there pet, I seen what yer does wi' growin' things. If yer reckons yer can save 'em yer do what yer 'as ter". she said worriedly. Those seedlings were too important to lose, they represented survival to the community being food for themselves and the animals and hopefully enough surplus to trade.

"Can I come with you?" asked Tom nervously to Lucky. They both squeeze past the polythene into the room with table upon table of seedlings in various pots, old chipped, mugs and cups...anything that will hold enough soil for the small fragile plants. "Wow there is a lot of them....they haven't had any water," she says earnestly to Renn. She looks in a couple of pots, touches the tender leaves and then beckons Tom over. "Hold my hand," she says, "if I start to darken brighten me." She stands her right hand palm upwards eyes closed. The air in the room seems to throb as she stands there, all around her seedling push up from the soil growing larger, stronger, hardier. She seems to wobble a little and Tom stares hard at the girl, the throbbing gets louder, the whole house seems to vibrate with it.
There are surprised cries from outside the house, happy cries as the power continues to hit the air. Then abruptly it stops, Lucky stumbles and falls into Toms arms. "Help me," he shouts, "she's too little to do all this!" The air smells of greenery and growth. |

Ren looked at the seedling as she hurried into the room behind Tom and Lucky, they did look sorry for themselves with their leaves looking pale and washed out, their tops drooping towards the edges of the makeshift pots. Some of them were showing signs of turning brown. She didn't get a chance to speak before Lucky began what Ren considered her 'magic'. She watched in awe as the seedlings revived almost instantly, feeling the power coming from the small girl and reverberating through the house. Ren jumped forward as Lucky collapsed and the power vanished. "Lucky.. pet" she cried helping Tom lower the child to the floor, she looked so tiny and delicate. "What yer done? Us coulda give 'em water. It were them flyin' things, upset folk so them forgot but them was fine a coupla day back. Yer only 'ad ter perk 'em up a mite not go 'urtin' yersel' fer 'em. Us don't wanter lose yer pet, yer means a lot ter us.. ter me". Ren stroked Lucky's damp hair, smoothing it back from her face, realising how fond she had become of the small girl in such a short time.

"Where's the well?" Jenna started to ask Renn and then it all kicked off. She pushed her way through the plastic and into the room with the others. The ancient scent of woodlands and greenery assailed Jenna's nose and she almost sneezed. Her eyes grew wide. "What is that smell?" She stood there for a moment transfixed in the moment, until she saw Lucky. Reality brought her down sharply. "Lucky! Are you okay? Tom, what do you need? Is there anything we can do?"
