“Sounds good to me Katy” yelled Hoss navigating his bulk into the back of the truck ignoring the debris of Zed that littered the front of his shirt. “C’mon Little Britches”

Cap held his breath while he started the truck. Would it start? It did! Lori piled in behind Books and Hoss. Kate slammed the passenger door, and they were off. Cap gunned it, just as another smaller pack of zeds stumbled into the street ahead of them. The horde of Zeds slammed into the truck as it sped away. Their rotten fingers clawed at the body of the Blazer, trying to find something to grab on to, but they failed. Cap kept the petal to the floor, and left a string of zombie parts in his wake.

In a few minutes the runners were back on the main highway, dodging abandoned cars, and on their way back to Castle.

Lori slumped into her seat and closed her eyes, just relishing the safety that the Blazer provided. She was safe. they were safe! Now that the adrenaline of the situation was wearing off, she was beginning to feel all of her pains and aches. The bite on her shoulder hurt, and she felt like she was barely holding together. She was pretty sure the others felt the same way. But the mission was accomplished, and she hoped it was worth Sandy's sacrifice.

Kate just nodded her head and checked and rechecked her pistol obsessively.

"That was awesome guys. Great work!" She turned and looked back at the others. "Awesome," she said with a wide grin on her face. "Awesome!" she repeated and punched Cap in the shoulder.

Once they reached the straight highway, Kate nodded off to sleep. It was a long ride back.

Hoss rubbed his flabby stomach as he bounced around the back seat of the truck “This Zed crunching don’t ‘alf give me an appetite” he declared “When I get back I’m ‘aving a double portion of pancakes, that way I can give Ruddy a treat too.” He looked out of the window watching the vista that was clouded by the dust churned up by the vehicle, pass by

"I'm just going to let the doctors look at me. My shoulder is killing me." Lori didn't mention that her whole body was killing her at the moment. She wanted rest, maybe she'd eat later. "Just remember to leave something to eat for me okay Hoss?"

Lori winced as Hoss' large hand smacked her sore thigh. "What, and lose my girlish figure? Not on your life."

"I'd like to keep mine a little longer if possible." Lori reached over and grabbed Hoss' belly and gave it a shake. "You still have a figure, just more robust."

The trip back to Castle felt a lot longer and lonelier than the drive down did. Sandy's absence was more than conspicuous.

Books didn't speak for the ride home. He just looked down at the papers in his hands. He knew what was in that packet. He knew that the maps would allow runners from Castle to explore farther and with far more precision than ever before. He knew that resources where scarce and that any advantage in gathering supplies was crucial to their survival. He knew that these records were worth far more than the life of any one man . . . or woman. He just couldn't bring himself to say that aloud. He could barely allow himself to think it. Life was scarce too and precious, and Sandy's death filled Books with anger and despair.

Books was also glad that the life required to retrieve these records was not his own, and at that he felt nothing but shame.
