What was wrong with Adam? Janet looked at him in puzzlement. He had been happy enough to see her it seemed and she hadn't noticed a problem when Jericho appeared. Was it that the girl was blind? Certainly that might be a problem if they ran into trouble but it was hardly the poor girl's fault. Pushing past Adam she went up to her. "Hello, I can't speak for him but I'm pleased to see any people who managed to survive this. Would you like to come with us? I'm Janet, Jericho, who you were talking to already introduced himself, he has a German Shepherd with him called Rex and the other man is Adam. He's got a dog as well, but I don't know what it's called. What's your name?". Janet knew she was waffling but it had been too long since she had any company and she was starting to become anxious about moving on. What if that.. whatever had made that noise and.. and the smell.. came back. "Adam's right though, we should get moving" she said with slightly false lightness. "We're trying to get to the city center. You can walk with me if you like, I'll warn you if there's anything in the way that your cane might miss but feel free to take my arm if you need any help or you can take up Jericho's offer, your choice".

After about 30 mins of travelling the party passes a block of council flats, most of the windows have been smashed. The cars in front of the flats are burned out. What is unusual is one wall of the flats, once covered in graffitti has been white washed and in red is a symbol a mixture of a spiral and a snake and below it has been scrawled "praise be, the master has returned".

"What on earth?" Adam said, drawing his dog closer to him, hoping desperately that the red wasn't blood, looking around in case there happened to be someone who wanted to add a bit more to that message.

Following Adam's gaze, Janet saw the wall about the same time he did. "My God what is that? It.. it's hideous." She moved closer to Adam, clutching his arm for comfort.

"Whoever painted that must be deranged" she murmured.

Adam flinched slightly as Janet took his arm, he was not used to this, not used to being used to help comfort, not used to human touch, at lest not in this way. Yet, he said nor did anything to prevent it.
Hearing her comment on the frame of mind of the perpetraitor of this writing, he nodded his head in agreement, "Must be some sort of religious cult...... Perhaps they're responsible for this? Or at least think that they are?"
He looked towards Jericho, "I'll leave the theories to you."

"I dread to think. Whoever they are I don't want to meet them. Things got really crazy towards the end of the epidemic, at least they did back where I lived, I suppose it was the same everywhere. This might just be someone's crazy idea to try and stop it, or like you said maybe be a religious cult". Janet really hoped it wasn't the latter. From what she had read of these things and seen on tv documentaries, some of those people could be very dangerous. She continued to hold onto Adam. He hadn't encouraged the contact, but he hadn't rebuffed her either and she needed the closeness of a fellow living person. Remembering that the girl with them was blind, Janet tried to explain what the rest of them were talking about. "There's a big block of flats, most of the windows gone and cars burned in front of it. They must have had some bad trouble here. On one of the block's walls the graffiti has been painted over with whitewash and someone's painted a red symbol on it. It looks like a kind of snake with a spiral and words under it.. 'Praise be, the master has returned'. Does that mean anything to you?"

Shelley had been holding onto Janet's arm as they had gone, using her cane to keep from stumbling over anything that may have been littering the street. She noticed when Janet tensed up, and was wondering what was going on. Hearing the others remarks, she was wondering what they were looking at, and if there was something dangerous nearby. Using what senses she had, she tried to tell if there was anything wrong.
Listening to Janet's explanation, she thought about it for a moment, and then shook her head. "Bollocks to me, I've never heard of anything like it. Are there people around, dangerous people?"

[So, what did I hear?]

Shelley cringes at what she can sense around her and tightens her grip on the woman's arm. "There...there are people in there. They're chanting something, must be four or five of them. We should leave. Please? Let's just go." giving another sniff, she says "Can't you smell it? It smells like death, let's just go!"

"O My God, Do you guys see that!?" He points to something hanging from a street light, there were chains too. Then he realised it was a naked body, crucified upside down on its makeshift cross, his throat slit from ear to ear. Beneath the light was smears of dried blood and what appeared to be a slug trail leading from there to a manhole.

"Everywhere smells like death now". Janet had been trying not to think about the pervasive stench; the one that wasn't just rotting garbage, but reminded, she noticed it anew. At Shelley's words she paused and listened herself. How could she have missed it. Several people chanting, unable to make out any words but the tone frightened her.
Jericho shouted. Turning, Janet was confronted with the sight of the murdered corpse dangling from a street lamp. With a loud scream she buried her face in Adam's chest. "No, God no, who would do something like that. We have to get away from here .. now .. immediately .. before those people in there come out and get us too. Please we must get away" she cried dissolving into sobs.

Adam was shocked by the sudden emotion emitted by Janet. One hand moved to push her away and another made for his waist. But, the hands didn't make it to their destinations, he was stopped dead by the sight that had made Janet bury her head in his chest in the first place. That body.......
He turned away from it. He had seen bad things 'inside', but nothing that could amount to this horror. His arms instead moved around Janet in a comforting way, and he gave her an embrace, though not exactly a very long one. He then cleared his throat, and again had to stop himself from being sick, the previous horrors of the day coming to him again, the popping...the small body... He shook his head, now was not the time to think on these things. "We best get out of here, quick!"

Shelley was doing her best to try and figure out what had upset them. Surely the smell..... "What is it? What do you see?"

"Death....." Adam said, not in the mood to explain what it was they had seen. He had in fact barely registered the fact that Shelley was blind, instead too self involved with horror and loathing for what had happened earlier, a fate that might become the fate of some of the group.
