You pull your gun and steel yourself to make the move. A few people see you and quickly cross to the other side of the street. Raising the weapon, you draw a bead on the roof. Nothing happens.

Deciding that it would be better to be safe than sorry, Hayden fired one solitary warning shot across the roof, and then shouted, "Don't try anything, put away your weapon and get down here now!"

The shot echoes around the rapidly emptying street. Only you and Sally remain on the strip-crete. There's no response from above. Either you've scared them off, they're a professional doubling back on you or they are not there.
Sally starts to mutter a series of numbers. Her soft voice floats towards you on a warm breeze. "6. 5. 9. 8. 2. 2. 9," she says levelly although towards the end she almost sounds like she's starting to sing. "One. Two. They're looking for you," she sings to that old nursery tune. "Three. Four. We'll count some more."
How much longer until the cops turn up? They don't rush in this part of town but all the same.

That woman was getting annoying now. Not only had she been leading him on a wild goose chase this whole time but now she's turned crazy to top it all off.

You check the reflection in one of the apartments over the road. There's no sign of activity on the roof. A military skimmer passes overhead; no doubt for R & R in Ruben. It's belly lights wink on and off. On it's side an advert for Magdalene Security Services runs. In the blank part of the loop, the rooftop is reflected. Other than a few air-con vents, the top is empty. You man has long since fled.
Sally's condition nags at you. What to do with her? Leaving her seems the best option seeing as you weren't supposed to make contact. Still, if she karks it, will that mean you still get paid? Ah, the proverbial rock and a hard place. There's no medical centre you can drop her off at and she's lost all her ID, so that rules out calling her insurers: assuming she's got some.
You wonder about an old friend: Winston. He's owes you one after someone boosted his medical scanner. Maybe he can tell you what's wrong with Sally.

Hayden sighed and put his gun away, deciding that whatever he did he was best to get out of here quick. He may have a licence for his gun, but that didn't mean that the police would be thrilled about him firing a shot across the city as he just did. His conscience, or rather his subconscience got the better of him and he went back over to Sally. He hunkered down in front of her and held her arms, "We're going to move now," he said to her quietly, "Don't be afraid, I'm not going to hurt you."
Why he was speaking to her he did not know, it's not as if in her current state that she understood anything by the looks of her. So then, it was off to Winston.

"Five, six. I can hear those ticks," Sally sings quietly. She goes back to her counting even as you take her by the hand and lead her away from the middle of the street. People are beginning to point and you shuffle down a side alley as quickly as you can. So long as you have her hand, Sally follows you.
The alley's floor is wet from the drip of air-con units. Empty plastic barrels are piled up against one wall and a small ground crawler sits wedged in the alley towards the other end. The nearest door is a scarred steel monstrosity. It is slightly ajar and has the words "Joe's Bar: Staff only" fixed to it. Someone has spray painted "or else" in a military font.

As he walked with Sally in tow, Hayden tried his best to comfort her but found himself at a loss as to what to say or do with her. As he led her he wondered where Winston lived, his memory was a bit fuzzy. He saw the open door and moved on past he, he needed no more trouble at the moment, things were bad enough as they were.

You walk by the doorway trying to think how to get hold of Winston. He doesn't carry a mobile. The last time you asked about it he made some crazy story about them being tracking units for The Man. It was hard to tell if he was joking or not.
The ground crawler blocks the alley at the far end. It's bottle green paint is scuffed and scratched. Has it been dumped or is someone picking something up?
"Seven, Eight: just calculate," Sally sings to no-one in particular.
Behind you, the door to Joe's bar opens and a mixed group of people spill out into the night. They're all dressed in plastic wet look suits, complete with ties. Two men carry guitars, one guy a drum machine and a man with a pork-pie hat on, carrys a synth. Caught up in their own little world of in-jokes and banter, they ignore you completely.
The Staff Only door swings in the stale air showing the corner of the bar. You can see Winston ordering a drink. How does he do that? Turn up when you really need him.

Perhaps mobiles really were tracking units, and Winston was the Man. Hayden didn't know, but regardless he needed help right now, and it seemed that his path had already been laid out in front of him. Keeping ahold of Sally, he entered the bar.
