Running was not one of Arty’s normal hobbies but running up hill was even more of an unlikely occurrence. His thigh and calf muscles burned and the cartilage in his knee joints groaned as he tried to maintain a speed just above that of a snail’s. Just above the rhythm of the drum Arty thought he could hear Eldrid talking to the dead weight he was carrying but as the idea was so absurd Arty put it down to the fact that his blood pressure was probably sky high. “Did...” Arty tried to speak in between sucking in lungfuls of air “You see...” his mouth was dry and the words seem to stick in his throat as he tried to keep up with Eldrid and Finn “The mock turtle?”

sweat stung inhis eyes. His nose and leg was throbbing with pain from the fighting ha had been involved in. The upwardsloped tunnel seemed to strech on forever.... and behind hm Artey wa smumbling nonsense:
"Hell."
"You."
"Saying?"
He panted as he ran along. Or 'jogged'. And even that would be streching the truth.

At Last the tunnel came to the first circular room they had entered, and thankfully for Eldrid the way out was all down hill. Behind the group followed the natives, though they seemed to be mainly following and not yet attacking, for whatever reason.

Reaching the summit of the passage way Arty legs nearly gave way, bending at the waist he rested the palms of his hands on his knees. Droplets of sweat ran down his nose and then plummeted to the dusty floor. In between gulping for air Arty heaved a few words “There was a native covered in a shell back there” Turning to face the way they had come from “Our friends seem some what reluctant to follow us” he observed “Which means they are either scared of us or herded us in here to be slaughtered. “ Straightening up as his breathing abated to just to panting level he continued “Personally I prefer the former option to the latter”

Eldrid wasn't about to stop and ask them why they were holding back. Might be he'd figure out soon enough, like now that the turtle was well and truly submerged, maybe their neighbours, the shark-people would come visit? The image made him giggle a little; "shark people"... they'd look stupid.
Downhill was better than uphill, he noted.

While runnign Finn says ''I wonder why their not attacking, I have heard some rumours of tribes who prefer to capture intruders alive so they can sacrifice them later...I hope thats not the case here.''

It certainly did seem as if the group was being herded, and soon they were all of the caves and back out into the eerie glow.
