Resting against the wet brickwork of the empty shop, you spy your target. A custom job this one. Test our a new energy rifle from some funky black-tech guy. The rifle is squat, almost like a carbine with a smooth snubbed nose.
Your target crosses the street, some guy trailing behind her. People criss cross your view until she becomes stationary. You line up the shot and touch the fire button. Just like the man said, they'd be no flash and no noise. Maybe it's a test system. The woman puts her head in her hands and looks like she's about to cry.
The task is complete, all you need to do now is head back to Joe's bar and collect your reward. That and drop the rifle off.

Tan packed up the rifle and slid into the shadows of a nearby ally. By far, this had been the easiest job he'd had in recent memory. Getting paid to pull off an essentially silent, undetectable kill was fine by him. Walking through the mostly abandoned back streets, he made a hasty retreat back to the bar to collect his reward.

Something tugs at Tan's street smarts as he breaks down the energy weapon with practised ease. Whatever the thought it, it remains illusive. Soon the system is in it component parts and is packed into the tedious shape grey foam that fills the carry case.
Somehow you'd expected more. Scorsby - the midman who set this gig up - was very cool about it. It's the fifth job you've had from him and things are working out for you. A couple more 'slumps' like this and you'll be able to move up in the world. Maybe apply for a licence and join the corporate mercs pulling a steady wage on the ship runs.
