As Eldrid sat alone with his brother there was a noise, a faint clicking noise. It came from above, and as Eldrid looked up he saw a spider, about the size of his fist. As he watched it crawled away and into one of the holes in the wall. Outside he could hear what sounded like crickets chirping, or whatever it was that crickets did.

Spiders! Eldrid was no fan of those, and certainly not being woken up by the passing of one. A shudder went all alog his spine, and he moved away from the wall, checking to make sure there were no spidey-holes behind where he had been sitting.
The sound from above struck him as a little odd, too. He'd better go make sure it wasn't those natives, communicating in bug-speak, as they crawled up on the place. Making sure he had Brutal JAck with him, along with the other weapons he had gathered, Eldrid ate another pickle, before making his way up the ladder and quietly unbolting and opening the trapdoor, and sneaking outside...

The shop was empty, at least as far as human shaped creatures go. Every now and then a mouse would run from one crack in the wall to another. The crickets kept on chirping, but then there was another noise, the sound of someone falling into a pit and then a scream which was cut off almost instantly. There were further muffled sounds from outside.

"Oh Hells..." Eldrid thought, hearing someone falling into the pit; surely none of the crewfolk had been stupid enough to walk into that trap, which meant that the natives were here. Did that mean that the others were all dead? Not likely; if they had found and killed the others, there was little or no chance that they would send a raiding party out for him alone. Sadly, that also meant that outside the shop might be a raiding party large enough to tackle their whole group...and here was he, alone.
Well, not alone; he had Jonah, and Brutal Jack. Moving slowly through the dark of the shop, inching along, he moved towards a crack in the boarded-up windows, hoping to get a look outside.

Outside the eerie light from the dome showed Eldrid the scene that he had feared, though it was not as bad as he feared. There were five natives outside, all of them staring down into the pit where it seemed that several natives had fallen in during their attempt to try and bring the first native out. There were talking in their weird brackish language, paying no attention to the building.

"Some of them look as though they're standing on the other side of the 'moat'...And they all seem pretty busy with their moatbound bretheren..." Eldrid thought. "So, if I can move out there carefully, and drive Brutal in to the back of at least one of them before they see me, and then scream my lungs out, I think I might give them the shock of a lifetime. So, why not... I can always try and retreat back into the house as the ones on the other side of the pit-trap jumps over."
Crap plan, but the alternative was to simply wait until they all came towards the house, focused and aware. This was as good a time as any to strike.

As Eldrid opened the door there was a slight creak but the natives were too entwined in attempting to get their feelows out to notice. Eldrid managed to creep to within two feet of the natives when he heard a sound which froze him solid, it was the old crone, and she was bantering with someone as usual. Her voice came in from behind the shop, and looking at the side of the shop Eldrid could now see a very old overgrown road which none of them had spotted before.
However, he was not the only one to hear the old crone speak, one of the natives looked up and saw Eldrid almost upon them. It's eyes widened in suprise and it fell over into the pit crying out to its four friends, who also looked up. Shock registered on their faces, and then something else, was it hunger?

It felt as though time stood still for a moment. The jungle seemed silent, too, as Eldrid and the natives stared at eachother. Then Eldrid contored his face in a grimace and screamed a wild roar, before he swung Brutal Jack at the closest native.

The roar seemed to echo across the island, at least for those nearby, in truth it went less than forty feet before being lost to the air. However three of the natives lost their precarious balance on the edge of the pit and fell in. The last remaining native stared at Eldrid in disbelief as 'Brutal Jack' cleaved through his shoulder causing him to collapse into the pit as well. The coast was clear.

That woman!
She had almost ruined it for him! Where the devil had her voice come from, anyway? Back over there, by that overgrown path? Was that where the others were? Maybe... or maybe she had led them into an ambush, and now she had warned her allies about his attack? He'd go investigate that piece of road, but he would be cautious. He couldn't trust anyone on this island, save Brutal. But on the other hand, Brutal was beginning to prove an incredibly valued friend. "I've got half a mind to think ye've got magic in ye, Brutal..." Eldrid whispered with a grin, before heading towards that overgrown pathway, with no little amount of apprehension.

The path continued along for night on five hundred yards before it came to an opening - sort of like a cave - jutting out from a small hill. There were rails along the floor of the opening and what seemed like an old mining cart lay beside the rails, the opening itself going down into the ground at a leisurely angle. There was a small building to the right hand side of the cave's mouth, the old crone was no where to be seen.

So... this was where she stayed, was it? Well, Eldrid would have to check out that shack first, obviously, before heading into those caves... maybe some of the gold was still down there? Well, there'd be time enough to think on that later. Besides, it was getting so that gold wasn't all that important at this time; if they never got home, gold was just metal; not fit to eat, and useless for tools.
So, shack first. Eldrid kept looking behind him and all around as he moved. Beside, maybe the clever creep had made traps, too. He''d have to look out for those.

When Eldrid entered the shack he found that it was a tip. Surely no-one could live here? But then again, it was the crone.....
The shack seemed to be comprised of mainly an office, papers littering the floor and rotten desks, various crusted quills and such lying around. There was a small section that seemed to be cordoned off as a bedroom, were a solitary single bed had been nearly eaten through by woodworm and moths. There were no belongings in the shack that gave evidence that it had been used recently.

Eldrid shook his head in a rare moment of sympathy for that old creature. He imagined how his little sister Sif would have fared if she had been left alone on a desert island, with only rats and cannibals to keep her company. Still, the woman had clearly lost her wits, and this place was a good indication of that.
Picking up a paper at random, hoping to learn something new about this place, and guessing that the woman couldn't read too well either, Eldrid kicked through some of the junk as he did so to see if there was anything useful around, his eyes only half on the paper.

The piece of paper seemed to be an account for something, by the looks of it gold brought in vs. gold brought out. As Eldrid kicked through the junk all he managed to procure was a splinter, a rather large one at that, which managed to push through his footwear and into the soft flesh of his right hand big toe.
