Career History : Started off with absolutely nothing, and built up quite a tidy reputation as a decent trader - which meant a lot of returning trade came to him. Most of this trade was Vilis in origin, now he couln't give a tuppeny damn about the politics real;ly, he just knew there were masses of money to be made from any form of conflict. He looked at the money to be made and started to cultivate TFL contacts as well, hoping to play one side off against another.

However it was revealed that he was supporting the TFL, and this totally destroyed his small, but growing fortune and his standing with the Vilis trading community. Forced to flee from Downport he drifted for a few years before starting the upward climb once more. These were especially hard times for Orthan, and often he had to resort to less than scrupulous means to earn a crust, something he feels deep shame over. But you have to survive!

One time he was part of a team who were trying to break into a warehouse. As Orthan tried to get past a security system, he was electrocuted, burning his hands and forearms quite badly, especially the left arm. This has left his hands scarred and the flesh brittle and tender. As a result he often has to bathe his arms and hands in soothing oils to give some cessation of the pain he suffers on a regular basis. He always wears gauntlets to hide his scars, or when closer "touch" is required, fine leathern gloves.

Prawen Dronscealous - During the disturbance on the outskirts of Downport, a rival trader, Dronscealous, suddenly stepped into the void left by his sudden departure from Downport and took all of his clients and is now doing very nicely thank you very much. To this day Orthan thinks Dronscealous was the architect of his downfall.

The doctor who managed to save his burnt limbs from amputation. Dr. Loxarin, who was once wanted for crimes against humanity - from the way he treated you you believe these were trumped up charges from somewhere in the Imperium.

That's great stuff Cearlan. Only a couple of things outstanding:

For gun combat choose a specialism from the following list:
1. Slug thrower rifle
2. Slug thrower pistol
3. Shotgun
4. Energy pistol
5. Energy rifle

Also - any equipment, weapons or armour you'd like now would be the time to ask. You are on board ship and the ship's locker has basic kit (plus some weaponry, ammo, meds, vacc suits etc), but still you might like to own more than the clothes you stand up in.

Being a Merchant, I assume he's be doing a lot of close quarter work, so something like a short-sword or better still a hunting knife may be appropriate. do I assume he has some sort of ledger / laptop type thingie.

Vacc suit would be a must as would all the associated paraphernalia of piloting / owning a ship.

A decent supply of his oils for his hands is a must - I'll assume these are plentiful throughout the area - a bit like e45 cream.

Tech level 9 laser pistol costs 2000 credits and the power pack is another 1000 on top - so you can't afford one at the moment........ the good news is that with your gun combat skill (energy pistol 1) your default level for other gun cbt is 0 - not the -3 you'd get without any gun cbt at all. The ledger is a personal hand-held computer - cost 700 credits and comes with a couple of data wafers (this machine - if you choose to buy it - is near to top of the range and can be networked with a good personal communicator (audio-visual-data - 250 credits) and a commdot (10 credits) to allow you to keep in touch with the ship's computers and other characters up to 50km distant); vacc suits and all that are from ship's locker; ship's med-bay is well supplied with the creams you use - note it may be that there are better solutions out there; you are welcome to a cutlass or a short sword. Specifics of ship's locker need to be discussed with Curry (character is ship owner) and I, if you think there's something you might want that might not be in a reasonably well supplied ship's locker.

Cutlass and shortsword may be decent final options, but I was thinking more of using it like this.

I am in close negotiations with another person and I notice that he is reaching for his laser pistol (?) he has the drop on me were I to get something large out of my trousers - I'm taking my weapon out here! I mean my gun or cutlass here you potty-minded person you - - but something like a dagger could be whisked out in the blink of an eye and brought to bear on my assailant. Maybe a wrist sheath? or something similar that was used to kill Dustin Hoffman's brother in Marathon Man.

To round him out a bit more let's give him some hobbies. Let's say he is fascinated by .... fossils. When times were hard he made his meagre living by scavenging for fossils which he managed to sell onto museums. During one such foray he discovered something that he wasn't meant to. This resulted in his partner getting killed and their ship "commandeered" by Imperial Forces along with two months worth of fossils he had a buyer for on a nearby planet.

Fortunately he was able to hook up with Finian Tucker (for example?) on his last job. It didn't earn a great deal, but put some food in his belly, so he agreed to sign on with him again.

Sounds good - and you can have a dagger with wrist sheath no problem and no charge. Do you want to share the story with Finian? And then I guess you're pretty much ready to go........ if you've adjusted your funds to cover the other equipment

I've added a level to Pilot (spacecraft) and also Orthan now has melee combat (unarmed) 1..... in short he's a mighty fine pilot and, somehow, his coffee throwing slapstick spat with Finian Tucker has led to him becoming not all that bad in a brawl either....... now Jackie Chan he ain't but he can at least throw a punch now.

Kinda tempted by a pistol too but I'll see what everyone else is plopping for before that firearm becomes a definate.
