Character: Peter Satner
Story:
A guy in a dirty all-weather coat sits on a park bench with a bottle of water and a half eaten loaf of bread. Every now and then he rips a piece off the bread and chucks it to a nearby crow.
"Y'see Frank," he says to the bird. "Don't mind if I call you Frank do yer?" The bird gulps down the bread. "Thought not," the man continues. "I'm there banged to rights at her Majesty's Pleasure doing 10 - 15 in solitary for blowing up that mosque. Tit for tat and all that. Then the mother of all sh**storms kicks off. Panic in the prison, talk of infection and a complete lock down."
He rips off two bits of bread: one goes into his mouth, the other he flicks to the bird. "I suppose you're not seeing so many people in the park now eh?" Chewing the mouthful, he washes it down with the water. "So five days in and I've not had a bite to eat. The cistern's about dry and I'm wondering if the power'll come back on when I hear a key go in the door. It's Mutty: big black guy you don't wanna cross. He don't look too good either. Eyes all puffy like he's been bawling and neck swollen up like he's swallowed a pillow. He says nothing and tosses me the keys."
The bird starts cawing.
"Alright, give me a mo, you greedy bird..." Rip. Throw. "So I'm out of my cell. The place stinks of sewage and something worse: death." He looks at the crow and chuckles. "You'd have been fine though eh? So I take a look around and Mutty's wandering back down to his cell. He just goes in and sits down. I stick my neck in and ask him what's up. The big guy's hands flex and shut. Dead, he says. They're all dead. Everyone outside."
The storyteller pauses and looks out into the distance. "A few hours later, I've got a brew on and the gates are blown open. A bit of a rushed job, but no one seems to mind. Mutty was right. Leeds was like a ghosttown. There's litter all over the place and not a soul in sight. I guess that's why you and me are having a chin wag."
He swigs the water. "Guess you gotta appreicate the irony, huh? I get out of solitary only to be on my own. What a p*sser." He throws a few more crumbs to the crow and then sets off. He hauls a backpack over his shoulder. A small satchel bounces gently against his hip. Precious chemicals should he need to ply his trade again. "C'mon Frank," he calls. "There's gotta be someone left. I ain't that special."
Background:
Satner was doing time after being convicted for blowing up a mosque in Leicester. Rumour has it he did it as a favour for an anti-government terror group New Republic. NR's criminal operations had been under threat from a cell working from inside the mosque and Satner put an end to it..... that and two dozen regular folk who just happened to be near the car bomb.
Four years later there's no sign of getting out. No for a serial 'problem solver' like Satner. "Satchel" Satner. The guy who let three kids drop satchels off at a Derry train station before levelling it and a number of British soldiers.
Peter's had a long time to think, tucked away in his cell. Drawing up ideas for locks, a minature wind mill but never anything that'd go bang: he's sure They read everything.
Now outside, he's alone - except for his occasional shadow, Frank - and the world is a very different place. There's no government to bring down. No secret police man to feel his collar. Peter's slow burning hatred of the system kept him warm. Now, alone. He's getting cold. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe society - and Peter - get a chance to start over. If there's anyone left that is....
