"And why Sally?" Ophelia asked coldly. "She's no undesirable, or was she just someone convenient to test your new toy on?"

"She knew too much," Hopton replies. His head tips slightly to one side; like a cat looking into a bird cage. "How did you manage to escape? You were dead."

"So you don't know everything then" sneered Ophelia. Her own fangs were evident now and how she wished she had been able to obtain the ones with toxin. "I think we'll keep it that way. What you don't know can't hurt anyone".

"You may be wrong there," Hayden 6 interjected, "Because if these two don't happen to know a way to cure this problem I think they'll find themselves in quite alot of pain."

"I hope they will anyway" snapped Ophelia. "What about that guy we were going to see?" she hissed quietly to Hayden, hoping the two men wouldn't hear. "I had hoped he would be able to sort this".

Aut holds up his hands - they shake. "Now, let's not be hasty. You guys just happened to be in the wrong place," he gabbers. "I'm sure we could work something out. Right Hopton?"

Hopton manages to pull his gaze from Ophelia. "You want me to lie to you?" he says. "Aut seems willing to. You ****ing kiss-ass."

Aut's face is a picture of panic. "W-what?"

"You heard," Hopton replies cooly. "It's just a matter of time. We both know there's no cure....."

"It's not a disease," Shift interjects. "These good people are carrying cybernetic intelligences in their heads. My employers are not impressed."

Hopton's face turns slightly. There's a devilish twinkle in his eye. ".... unless you can solve the number puzzle."

"Liar," says Shift.

Hopton's lips slide into a smug half-smile: "Willing to bet your lives on that?"

"Willing to bet yours?" Hayden asked with a 8 wry smile on his face, hoping that 3 the effect was threatening but having the distinct 5 feeling that it wasn't.

Fidelis’ bottom lips trembled ever so slightly as the conversation unfolded and scant bits of information were divulged. He mulled over the idea that his brain was now playing host to an artificial intelligence and was not overly happy about the situation. “So we are just pawns in your little game then." his voice full of viterol "Just some poor low lives that you can happily experiment on and then dispose off, do you really think no-one will miss us” even as he spoke he knew that their demise wouldn’t exactly be head line news “And then you throw us a little bone that if we jump through the right hoops by solving some puzzle that there might be hope?” Fidelis stood there indignantly and proud in his newly acquired coat, goading Hopton into disputing his words. The trix then sagged as his bravado melted away “Well ok stop being so coy and tell us how we stop the number crunching in our heads”

Shift chuckles at Hayden's line and the two suits look decidedly nervous.

"Pawns?" Aut replies. "No, you were just unfortuneate. If that idiot mercenary had done as tasked, " he replies shooting Hopton a dark look. "Then you'd all be in perfect health. You were infected when the gun went off."

Hopton pauses to lick his now dry lips. "Let me go and I will leave you the code."

"Don't trust him," Shift states flatly. "Do you think that a cybernetic intelligence couldn't crack a human puzzle? It's a bluff, he's stalling."

Aut's voice is fearful: "What about me?"

"What about you?" Hopton retorts. "If you'd have done as I'd asked we'd be enjoying a nice drink with the Old Man, not staring down the barrel of a gun."

OOCFor those of you who have the Psychology skill, please make a skill check with COMMS + Psychology + D10.

If you don't have it, use KNOW + Perception + D10 - although you'll need a higher roll.

All

Time draws out in some odd negioating stand-off. What noise there was in the Mall has died off. Only the soft whisper of water and the call of birds can be heard. Hopton seems distracted. Aut is nervous as man about to be hung.

Fidelis and Ophelia

Spoiler! Highlight the box below to view the hidden text.
Hopton's gaze is distracted. You notice his eyes moving more than they should: focusing on something only he can see. Your concern grows and you look down to his right hand. He appears to be moving his thumb around as if guiding an invisible joystick.

Shift said both suits had artificial eyes. Hopton must be using an internal computer! As the cent drops, Hopton pushes his thumb into his index figure: the gesture to 'activatate'.

Hopton was full of it Ophelia was sure. He had no intention of letting any of them go, he was, as Shift said, stalling. He had no cure, he had said as much so why was he offering them codes in exchange for his release? The creep was looking distracted now she noticed, his eyes darting around frantically. Looking for a way out she supposed and fidgeting with his hands in his nervousness. But.. that wasn't the Hopton she knew right? The smooth, self assured, polished executive he had been when they arrived, that was the real Hopton. As she looked on, Ophelia realised it was only his right hand moving, the thumb seeming to operate an invisible control. "Of course" she murmured under her breath. "Artificial eyes.. internal computer..."

"EVERYONE.. WATCH HIM" she yelled. She lunged for Hopton, reaching for his hand to try and stop him as he pushed his thumb into his index finger...
