"Why don't we just knock on the door?" asked Janet. "There's a boy in there, Peter and I saw him looking out of the upstairs window. I don't know if there's any others, but it might give a better impression of our intentions if we try that first rather than just break in". Janet's views had changed a lot in respect of the more dubious talents of Shelley and probably Adam as well. Those talents would undoubtedly prove useful in this new world, however, the thought of breaking into a place where someone still appeared to be living didn't sit well.

While you are debating the pharmacy door is opened by an obviously malnourished boy about 9 years old, "Come in quickly," he says "before they see you"

"Come on" urged Janet to the others left in the car. "At least he's opened the door and we haven't had to persuade him. Let's get in there quickly before those dogs get here". The barking sounded louder now as she got out of the car and made her way towards the shop and from the depth of some of the sounds she thought there must be a couple of quite large animals. The boy must have had experience of them since he was urging them into the shop so that ruled out any possibility that they were friendly she thought as she hurried as best she could towards the open doorway.

Although he had moved quickly Leon feet dragged along the pavement, the moment is had left the shop’s entrance he had regretted the decision, why didin’t I just lock myself in there, I’m a prize idiot he berated himself. Nearing the vehicle his mood sombre and the thought of company irked him. The volume of the dogs’ barks seemed to indicate that they were closing in and instead of making for the car Leon veered off and followed Janet into the chemist “Hold that door” he grunted

Jericho jumps out of the rig with his rife and runs for the door, helping anyone who falls behind, the as soon as he gets in, he makes his way to the roof, even if it means climbing out a window to get up top, and then keeps his rifle ready for any dogs a comin.

Adam lurched into action, drawing his own gun in the process. As he looked at the malnourished boy thoughts of his previous encounter with a lone child survivor resurfaced and he felt sick. He looked at the gun and the thought that it could bring death to someone made him want to throw it away as far as possible, but no! It was a commodity, it may be a symbol of what he had done in the past but then he had done what he had needed to, and he would do the same in this life, nothing had changed. He got out of the car as quick as he could and made for the door.

"Thanks lad," Peter says. "I owe you one." He doesn't go inside, but steps back pushes the door open with an arm - trying to leave as much room as possible. Come on, come on! he chants inwardly. "Get a move on people."
Wrapping the woolie hat around the end of the crowbar, he pulls the top of the lighter fluid off with his teeth and sprays the hat with the stinking liquid. Making sure he doesn't drip accelerant in the doorway, Peter angles the crowbar away from him and lets the soaking hat hang over the pavement, greasy spots of chemical staining the dusty pavement. "My favourite hat too. B**locks. Oh, sorry kid."
He gets the lighter ready.

Janet finally made it to the shop and slipped in through the door. "Thank you" she said to the boy then stood a little awkwardly, not sure how to talk to him. "Er.. hello" she said, hating the way her voice sounded so false but unable to stop it. "What's your name? Are you on your own or are there any grown ups with you?"

"I'm joe, been on my own for a couple of weeks now since they ate my mum." He seems remarkably calm, "Can't offer you a drink or anything, all the foods gone now. Was thinking of moving on soon, finding something to eat.." When he speaks about "they" he points across at the Morrisons store

"They ate..?" Janet recoiled, an expression of total shock on her face. "Who...? Do you mean the dogs?" He had pointed at the supermarket, maybe the pack had their lair inside.

"No, they eat dogs too. When they can catch them, human beings are much easier," his voice is flat and expressionless. "They are like you lot, not bothered about clothes though. They dress in rags and blood mainly. I try and keep myself hidden. They are currently living there" He points once again at the Morrisons store.

"Thank God we decided not to bother going in there" Janet thought. Trying to keep her voice under some kind of control she said "Joe, whoever they are I can promise you they are nothing like us, we don't.. eat people. You're welcome to come with us, we can take you to a place that's a lot safer than this." Janet looked around to see if everyone was inside yet. "Hey everyone, this is Joe" she said, an undercurrent of fear in her voice. "I think you should all hear what he has to say, it looks like we may have to get away from here in a hurry".

"Aye," says Peter in a gruff tone. As the lad points to the supermarket, he lets out a sigh. "Talk about dumb luck." He pulls a plastic bag from his pocket and wraps it around the fluid soaked hat. "Thanks for the warning, Joe. Let's get a shift on before those nutters come out to play. There'll be other pharmacies we can go to."
Peter's eyes scan the structure of the supermarket. The load bearing walls, which supports you could take down. He shakes his head and looks back at the landy. "We should drive off the wrong way too. No point tipping them off."
Maybe a visit another time would be in order, he thinks.

Leon slinked through the doorway and stood glowering at the floor with his hands shoved into his trouser pockets. He occasionally sniffed as Janet conversed with the boy, “So what there’s nothing at all left in the supermarket?” he asked deflated completely ignoring the idea of cannibalism

"Dunno, I haven't dared go near the place after what happened to my mum...." said Joe, his comment fading off as his voice started to crack with emotion.
From outside the barking of dogs became louder and a small pack, maybe 10 animals came streaming around the vans. Leaping and jumping excitedly, attention drawn to the energetic dogs nobody noticed the cannibals arrival. There was a yelp from one of the larger dogs as a naked man leapt on it knocking it to the floor and bit into its flank. Suddenly there were yelps from several of the dogs as they were attacked similarly.
