[Early Bird]

Ophelia looked quickly at Fi. She was losing it. An easy thing to happen what with all that they had been through, they would all likely deal with it in different ways but it was a bad scene in a place like this. "Hey just chill girl" she said quietly. "Whatever's going down is none of our concern, we should be fine so long as we stay out. Anyhow, there's four of us, we're not that easy a target".

Cass was striding along calmly, she had been here and done some of those things. Funny to think as low as her position had been in the stack she'd improved her life from this scene

"Not an easy target?" Hayden said raising an eyebrow, "where have you been the last few days, the four of us have been under constant attack, the number gun thing, whatever it was, the monorail, Hopton, Nae, I'm afraid our numbers haven't seemed to deter anyone thusfar."

“Chill?” replied Fi “And this comes from the ice queen herself, have you seen that over there” she risked a small nod “That is, well that could happen, to anyone” She shivered again but this time not only from the frigid temperature.

Fi knew what Cass said was right, she had survived the Stack for long enough to know the rules of the game, it was just so much harsher down here that it grated all her senses. Grasping the crotch of her overly tight jeans “Just trying to find my inner tough guy, but its cold and he's shrunk quite a bit” a weak smile crossed Fi’s lips as she tried to find her usual flamboyance.

"My point exactly" hissed back Ophelia. "I wasn't going to put it so bluntly, for what it's worth I was trying to help Fi, but.. what she said"

Being the ever adult that she was Fi poked her tongue out at Ophelia as soon as she turned her back. “Just quicken your pace and let’s get in and out of the bar from hell” she spat back.

You chatter closely as you walk down the street. People get out of you way and flow around you. No-one wants to bump shoulders in this part of Washport. From across the road, a surgically made over woman leaves a side alley and draws her coat around her. She drops something in a nearby trash barrel and walks on, her large boots crunching against the dirt of the street. In a moment, she's lost in the crowd.

You pass the trashcan, a bloodied knife starts to dissolve over drink bottles, half eaten food and other junk. As the plastic self melts, the blood on it drips, soaking into a picture of the Old Man at a press conference. The headline above it jumps out at you: Magdalene Corporate Council Donates K's to Syndrome Research. You keep going. What does that mean?

You pass a noisy bar where a welcome rush of heat tips out into the street. There's people of all shapes, sizes and sexes gyrating on podiums, against polls or even together in cages hung from the roof. Rowdy yells can be heard and a number of people are heading in to this venue. There are no security checks, just a pack of massive Meatboys sporting taser-powered knuckle dusters and stun rifles.

Passing the flesh pit, you have to wait at a crossroads. A gang of heavily laden electric trucks weave their way down the street - Florence Lane - and head off towards factories. The crowd are reflected in the dark plastic. Your own image stretched and distended until it's taut and tall. Four more crossings to go and you should be at the bar.

The business with the knife edges into your thoughts as you wait for the ground traffic to clear. The Stack doesn't have road-cars, 'cept maybe a cleaner bot when it gets really bad.

Something catches your eye in the reflective surface of one of the trucks. It's a face - or rather the expression on it. It's a look of studious interest - someone's following you. A man in a grey hoodie and a long waterproof coat or cloak. He's about six rows back. Your neck itches at the thought of this and you fight the urge to react.

Everyone

The electric ground trucks roll by. Their heavy loads make the reinforced street hum and that makes your teeth chatter. You pass the time by drawing your teeth together and letting them hum - a child-like game. A minute or so passes and they have gone. They roll down the street like heavy pigs, rolling slightly with their loads on the uneven road. Crowd traffic picks up as people spill across the yellow hatched road way. Not far now, maybe another two intersections and you'll be in the Meat Market.

So, they were being followed? "Guys, I've told you about my line of work, haven't I? That I happen to be an investigator?" He didn't wait for a response, instead he sought for a way to word what he knew without throwing a clue to the man following. Of course, the man might not be able to hear him, but he wanted to be careful just in case. "What I'm trying to say is that I am able to recognise certain signs about when someone else is in my line of work, if you get my drift?"
