"Chris brought us here, but the place had already been turned into a prison when we arrived." Shelley didn't really know what the place had looked like, she only knew what the others had told her. "But now, I guess it is everyone's home."

"Not me," Peter rumbled from his place by the door. "I turned up late... and by the sounds of it, probably a good thing with what you've said about that Chris bloke."

Janet put two spoonfuls of sugar in Shelley's coffee and stirred it. "There you go, two sugars" she said. She jumped as Peter spoke. "Oh, I didn't see you there, when did you come in?... I suppose it could be a home for us" she continued quietly. "We're well provided here and hopefully we can scavenge enough to get us a proper start, make this into a good community. But..." Janet hesitated. "I know I shall have some very bad memories of this place for some time to come and I imagine plenty of Chris' people will feel the same. I just hope we're strong enough to get past that".

Gracie had a little think about all he had heard. This place could be turned into a safe refuge with a little help from everyone.
"Who is this Chris character you all keep talking about?"

"He was the former leader of the main group here. I get the impression they haven't been here all that long, they just came in and took over. From what I've seen of them I should think most are decent people but Chris. He was.. he..." Janet stopped. She couldn't go on. There were no words to describe exactly what Chris was and if she continued she would have to tell about.. that.

"He was a monster." Shelley took a sip of her coffee, glad the sweet taste had overtaken the bitter flavor she had tasted before. "In every way you can think of. He truly was a monster and I'm glad he is dead."
Her voice sounded dead to her. She truly meant what she said. She didn't even want to imagine what Chris would have let the guards do to her, or even Janet again. She was just glad he was gone, and they could figure out how they were going to rebuild.

Gracie looked to the floor. He knew exactly what type of Chris was. He had encountered many like him from the way they described him. Being in the army and also coming from in a very violent part of his home town he was used to seeing what people could do to each other. It sickened him just thinking about it.
"I am deeply sorry for what you all must have gone through. If we stick together we will be able to protect each other. I know we are all stranger but we all need to help to make it work..."

"He was a symbiote," said Bill softly from the doorway. "He was home to a creature and in return was given 'talents'. There are others out there like him....just as dangerous," he puts the mug down on the counter and moves to watch the sky once again.

More? Like Chris? Just how many of them were there and were they all as bad as him or had his basic personality influenced how he used his.. talents? "You say obtaining this book will help to stop people like him and get rid of these slug things?" asked Janet. "If that's so we should do it as soon as we can. I hate to think of others in another community being put through the things that people here were subjected to". Janet wondered what was so special about this particular book. Bill seemed to consider it essential, but if it was just one particular volume they needed and by the sound of it, quite an old book, it must be very valuable. Too much so for general library use, it must be kept in a special cabinet or even in a room of its own. Maybe there would be some elaborate security system they would have to break through before they could take it.

Gracie looks at his new friends. "Bill said they are at their weakest during the day. We should make our way there, find somewhere to hide out and enter the library at dawn. Light may effect them so torches and light sources would be most effective against them. Bleach worked great last time so we should take enough as well."
Gracie was looking for a fight. Hearing about this Chris character had started to boil his blood.

On making Janet jump, Peter says quietly: "Sorry. Old habits. No sugar for me if you're making one." He reaches into his pack and takes out half a packet of chocolate digestives and puts them on the kitchen table.
Peter's head half turns as Bill speaks and then his eyes fall back on the biscuits. Taking one, he asks "How many more? It would be handy knowing what we're up against."

Janet passed Peter his coffee. After a quick check that everyone had what they wanted she sat back down. "How many of these things are there?" she asked. "How many more different ones are we going to encounter? There's the slugs, the ones like Chris and Ja.. his chief guard. I can't help thinking those cannibals were part of it as well and let's not forget that little girl. You remember her Shelley? Back at that house we sheltered in? She.. she turned out not to be a little girl after all..." Janet faltered. How was anyone expected to believe her about that child? Shelley could vouch that something had happened, but she hadn't been able to see the creature, indeed had been away from most of what happened.

Joeb looked up from his bread when Janet spoke "what little girl?" he asked , his voice coloured with suspicion, eyes narrowed slightly

That had done it Janet thought. Now Joeb would accuse her of being a child murderer, he would have her thrown out. "We went into the house to get out of the storm" she said to Joeb. "It was right before we met Chris. We were just trying to sort ourselves out when Adam found this child in the garden and we brought her inside. She didn't speak, we thought she might be.. traumatised, she only looked about four years old but she attacked us. We ended up having to kill her but she wasn't.. normal. Her eyes were completely black and her blood.. it was like acid". Janet looked helplessly at Joeb. "I know how crazy it sounds" she said. "I promise you I'm not in the habit of killing children but I swear, that was no child".

eyes still narrowed and fixated on Janet Joeb stood, turning round he shut his tool-box and hefted it with his right arm, still carrying the bread in the other he left the room calling back in a decidedly level tone
"I'm going to check on my kids."
After a few moments the front door slams.
