"No it aint" replied Ren as she ran forward with Jenna. "Dunno what's got inter 'em, us is good folk far as us can be". Ren was beginning to be concerned. What was wrong? This was not the friendly community she had left, she barely recognised the people they had become. It had started with Lake she realised. She was not the woman's favorite person but her hostility had been excessive and now it sounded like a mob inside the shelter. Ren slowed slightly. "'Ave a care Jenna" she warned. "Might be some kind o' sickness what's come on 'em all".

"That's all we need," Jenna panted. "An outbreak of lunacy to go with the Silvermen visiting." She did her best to stay out of sight and keep up with Renn. "Maybe we could use that to our advantage? Saints knows how though."

Ren reached the door and flung her weight against it to help Shu'Ka close it. "Wot's gone on in there?" she gasped. "Sounds like 'em's going crackers. Be them sick or owt?" Some kind of outbreak of sickness could easily cause a panic in such a confined space Ren knew. She hated having to turn against her own people this way but it looked like whatever had happened had caused them to turn on Shu'Ka and the children as strangers in their midst.

With Renn holding the door, Jenna tried to gather the children and keep them safe. "What happened in there?" she asked. "The Silvermen are planning on searching the farm. We've got to get out of this place. That or.... or find some place to hide this out."

Jenna nodded. "That sounds good, Renn." She squinted looking through the partially cleared debris that was the farm layout. "How far is it? You think we can make it without being seen?" Despite the odds, hope started to build within Jenna. The emotion began to warm her and she kept it close, trying not to get lost in the joy of it. A lot could go wrong between now and then.

"Aint so far" said Ren. "Don't reckon none'll see us long as us tek care. None use ter see me an' Birch slippin' off there noway". Ren blushed slightly, the effect quite pretty through the white fur on her face. Their games at the ruined building had been innocent enough, but Ren had sometimes thought Birch might have more than a casual interest in her, had occasionally allowed herself to hope.

Jenna risked a look over her shoulder. "If everyone's ready?" she asked the others. "Do we need a plan if we don't make it? Just in case, y'know..." She didn't want to think about what might happen if they failed, but it didn't help to plan.

"Look, I knows us 'as ter get t'kiddies hid, but I 'as ter know what's what" said Ren. "If there be sommat up wi' 'em in there I can't jes' leave 'em, them's me folk". Ren had a strong desire to protect the children, especially Lucky who she adored, but the loyalty to the community that she had spent her whole life with was stronger. "Shu'Ka, what's wi' 'em?" she asked. "Why's 'em tekkin after you 'n t'littleuns?"

Penelope watched the others sneak off, not wanting to attract the attention of the Silvermen. Their flying machine had mesmerized her, and she started walking towards it, reaching out with one hand to touch the strange machine.

"They all went mad....the older woman started it, she wanted to get near the children," tears fell from Shu'kas eyes as she spoke. "I killed her, the woman wasn't right....then it spread to the others....I think they want to kill me."

Penelopes fingertips touch a warm metal shell for a mere second before being forced away by one of the suited men. "Look but don't touch," he said menacingly.

Jenna touched Sku'kas' arm. "Oh, Saints! That must have been.... Oh. I. I'm sorry. You did what you had to," she said carefully. "Come on. We need to leave this place." She did her best to keep the panic out of her voice and stay strong. Jenna felt as if something was amassing, like so much Bad Cloud coming to a storm-head.

"Them went.. mad?" asked Ren in a small voice. It must be some new sickness that had come on the community, something they ate maybe. Ren knew about the sickness that could come from eating bread made with poisoned grain, they had tried to help a whole community that had been afflicted with that. They had all gone mad and killed each other, but theirs was clean, she knew it. "Lake" moaned Ren sadly. "I knows her didn't like me so much, but her were always fair. 'Ow'm I gonna tell Birch him's ma's dead an' what o' t'rest? There must be sommat us can do fer 'em".

Penelope stepped back, holding onto her tail nervously as she kept her distance from the silver man. "How does it work? She looked over the sky ship again, wanting to know how it worked and where the silver men got it. The others would be away soon, and then she could move off. But still, she was generally interested in the machine in front of her. She'd never seen anything like it.
