"It's a highway. What is there to scope out?" Kate laughed. "Stop the truck. Chances are I can get one in that junk pile started and moved out of the way. Unless it's a trap. Then we're ******." Kate laughed again in a way entirely incongruous with the idea of being caught in a trap.

"The terrain," Cap replies as if explaining 2 + 2 to a child. "Okay. I'll pull up when we're closer - 'bout 20 metres. Hoss, you take point and I'll cover Kate as she moves in. Anyone else? Rear guard and someone near the truck at all times."

He shifts gear and gets ready to stop the truck. "Any more than two dead-heads and we move back.... Stat. Got it?"

"I'll watch the back. It looked pretty clear behind us, but there may be a few of them stuck in cars that could b a problem." Lori let her hand go to her side, patting her 9mm Beretta. She'd gotten used to firing a gun and she felt she could take out anything coming her way.

"Well looks like I got the truck. Gotta make sure if there are any of those buggers, we can at least snipe them if they get too close to here." while she looks further at the map just to make sure.

"Ooooooookay," Kate said. She stuck her head out the widow and looked forward and then back. "Yep, its a road. And there's some cars. And a ditch. Terrain scoped." Kate laughed again.

She nodded in agreement and then pushed her blond hair out of her face. "If this is a wreck and not a trap, then it probably happened a loooooong time ago. I'm guessing there isn't a working battery among those junkers. We'll probably have to jump one of 'em. I brought cables." She jerked her thumb back toward the back of the SUV. After a moment, "Of course, it could be a trap that was set long ago and then abandoned. Which means the vehicles might be intentionally disabled. That'd complicate things."

As they drew closer to the scene of the crash, the runners got a better look at their predicament. To the right of the road, the ground sloped up into a tree covered hill, and a guard rail separated the road from the hill. The trees were mostly pines, so there wasn't a lot of foliage at ground level. The runners could see a good ways up the hill, and there didn't appear to be anyone lying in wait for them. There was, however, no way they could get the truck around the right side of the blockade. The hill was too steep and the trees too close to the road.

The ground to the left of the road was level for just a few feet, making for a very narrow shoulder. Beyond the shoulder, the ground dropped off into a shallow gully about ten feet deep at its deepest. The gully separated the north-bound lanes from the south-bound lanes. It was about 50 feet across from road to road, but the sides of the gulley were pretty steep and covered with dead grass. Getting the Blazer down into the gully would be easy, but it very well could get stuck, and well, that would be a disaster for the runners. The remains of an overturned minivan in the center of the gully testified to "the worst that could happen" for a vehicle trying to make it back up to the road.

The four cars (two four-door sedans, a small SUV, and a sports car) that blocked the lanes of traffic looked like they had been wrecked in various ways, but under closer scrutiny, it was clear that they were pushed end to end in a very deliberate and precise manner.

Cap brought the Blazer to a stop about seven or eight car-lengths from the crash, and the runners readied to perform their duties.

Feeling a bit skittish about what Kate said and the whole situation in the first place, and looking up from her map, Sandy looks and then holds her arms out before allowing the others to go out the door. "Don't move. I want to make sure that everything is okay first. We don't need any of you going out into a trap."

Hoss clambered over the girls in his haste to be out of the Blazer, stepping on toes and pushing past knees as he did so. He blew his puffy cheeks out as he checked out the scene before him. His bottom lip stuck out as he concentrated “ Betta air out ‘ere ain’t it”

"Ouch!"

Kate punched Hoss on the butt as he climbed over her and stepped on her foot. She piled out behind him and had her pistol in her hand by the time her ratty old boots touched the ground. Hoss, the man-mountain, was blocking her view so she sidestepped to his left and surveyed the line of cars.

"Well, we ain't dead yet, and no one is shooting, so I'm guessing this ain't a live ambush." Kate slapped Hoss on the back and left her hand there. "I'm right behind you buddy. Let's get this done."

"If it was, they'd have come at us from an L shape... oh never mind. Like you say, we ain't dead and they ain't started firing yet. I'm tired of waiting. Brooks? You mind taking the hot seat, while we go sort this out?" Cap takes another look around and checks his weapons before getting out of the vehicle. "I miss my M4," he says distractedly. "Place like this? You want range, buckshot through the skull ain't a given."

He gives the side of his neck a scratch, sniffs and then hauls the shotgun into position. Be vewy, vewy quiet: I'm hunting wabbits Except this time, the wabbits would chew your face off.

"Kate, you're up. Hoss: watch our backs." Cap raises the weapon into position and begins to move forwards.

Sandy sighs and mumbles under her breath "ungrateful idiots..." as she readies her weapon, looking around and stepping out of the vehicle.

Hoss sniffed loudly again still feeling the warmth from Kate’s hand radiating through his clothes “Fecking brain munchers, let them try it” snarled Hoss as he watched Cap stride ahead. He easily flipped his weapon in to a ready position in one easy motion, he may not be the smartest tool in the box but he knew the in and outs of his gun like an expert.

The runners focused all their attention on the roadblock and the surrounding terrain . . . as though their lives depended on it. The air was hot and still, and the uneven rumble of the Blazer's motor was the loudest sound that reached their ears. Nothing moved in the woods, around the cars, or up and down the highway. The living, it would seem--refugees, ambushers, and even the birds--had abandoned this highway for good.

"Well it doesn't seem as if though anything is in sight. To bad we couldn't just blow these cars up and get them out of our way." she grins. She keeps her gun at the ready, still keeping an eye out for anything that moves other than themselves.
