Days ago...

As the group was waiting inside the inn, Nailo trying to sneak outside by the upstairs window, noise rose from outside. A ruckus of weapons and imcomprehensible shouts with only a much louder "ALIVE!" shout to cover them all.

The captain ran down the stairs with a visible annoyed glare on his face, heading straight outside. The group followed to find Nailo, obviously stunned, ready to give up a fight to a squadron of readily armed guards.

Out of nowhere Taern pierced through the crowd her group was creating just outside the inn and for reasons only her could understand, she offered herself in exchange of everyone's freedom.

Nailo on his side didn't seem willing to go down so easily and using his magic built his defense. However he was met by four armored horsemen who quickly brought him down and tied him like a saussage unable to move or speak.

The leader of the guard agreed to let the group leave free, escorted out of town by his men. Nailo and Taern were taken prisoners.

The guards leading the rest of the group pressed them, not giving them much time to gather anything more than what they carried. They left the group outside the gates, keeping an eye on them until they were far enough.

The weather was cold, winter could be felt in the air even though the first snows were not there yet. Ahead was a single road, luckily the one they were to take if they wanted to bring the mission to a good end.

Without anything but a forbidden city and the sea behind them, the group decided to walk up the road ahead of them.

A little after noon, as it had been warned by the friendly captain, the group was ambushed by surprisingly well equipped bandits. Even more surprising for bandits, the band never asked for goods in exchange for life. The group was attacked and quickly realised that the projectiles they were shot at with were poisoned. A few of the bandits were killed, but the group was quickly tamed.

Waking up at night to the commanding word of a female child of no more than 12 years, just after being knocked down by bandits was a surprising shock.

It took a few hours for everyone to realize that this young girl was actually the leader of a cult who lived off blood sacrifice made to some unnamed night queen. The cult forced magical cuffs on every prisoner prohibiting magic use.

Quickly you realized that slavery was awaiting you, chores ranging from wood cutting to some less glamorous activities to satisfy the needs of the cultists.

Each night at dusk the less useful of the slave was sacrificed to the queen, with the child leader, named Miza, drinking and bathing in the blood and entrails.

The group members were not the only slaves however and the cult always seemed to find more through raids of many sorts.

However over a matter of a few weeks the first of the group was sacrificed, Logen. Without his daily alcohol he eventually did burst in a fit of rage, killing two guards and wounding some other.

Escape was tried often but everytime was anticipated in some way and met with torture so great that it made the slavery seem like a fun game.

This morning...

Taern

Your new companions, as irsute as they seemed, managed to guide the infiltration near the borders of the Ancient One's realm. The trip was slow, but at least no encounters happened. They warned of bandits and things more odd in the area, and being unsure if they worked for any of the Reds, they prefered not have the group's presence known.

It took two days to make the trip which Taern remembered making in three hours on the road when she came to town weeks ago. Then Taine whispered:

"We should be outside of the Realm by lunch..." And then a black out.

Tanner and Majere

A few hours ago, as the night was still in the sky, someone came to your prison cell. The specific features were blurred, but it was obviously a female of a young age. What brought doubt upon her true identity is the fact that she killed the two guards guarding you with a simple and silent touch of their cheek.

A gaze was enough to put the other prisoners to sleep. For some reason she kept the two of you awake, and even more, opened your cages. Seconds later her appearance became clearly, making it clear to the two of you that she was most likely the leader of your captors. The birthmark above her collarbone was making it certain.

She touched your cuffs with her young fingers before speaking:

"When the night saves you, leave the realm with haste." And she disappeared.

As the sun got up, armed cultists took you and brough you to the girl. There was Tanner and his companion, Majere and his bird, along with Bredak. She then called for one of her assistant and explained that he was to bring the three away to the Reds realm and sell you as slaves. Cultists were surprised by the decision but not got up to complain.

So the three of you were brought away, cuffed and chained, as slaves for trade. Your captors were not walking in the open in fear for patrols, so the trip was long. Eventually you noticed in the distance the hills that you remembered as the border to the realm...and then everything blacked out.

Everyone

At first it seemed like a spell of darkness had been cast, but slowly you were able to see. Not as much as in the light of day, but enough to see before you, much like a night lit by a half moon.

What was stranger is that people disappeared, while other appeared.

You were not where you used to be. You were standing right on the road, about two hundred feet from the foothills that marked the end of the realm. A pile of stuff was sitting in the middle of the group, which Tanner and Majere quickly recognized as their gear. On top of the pile was sitting a small box that Tearn and Tanner recognized for what used to contain the lens that Bredak took days ago.

And then the ground started to rumble

OOC said:

Taern, Tanner, Majere and Taine are there. Majere is Druid's new character, who was a captive with Tanner. Taine is my npc who was travelling with Taern. This may feel like an awkward "GM thumb" situation, but consider it a new start while still keeping what happened before. Enjoy :)

There was a loud peal as Taern stumbled against the sudden disorientation, her mace having somehow found its way into her hand and clanging against her shield before she could find her footing. Blinded, confused, and more than a little wary, she straightened into a battle stance. A quick glance to her side found the movement of at least one of her comrades --who, she wasn't sure-- and she could hear the sounds of others moving beyond her sight.

She dared not wait for her eyes to adjust fully, and so she stood tall and proud, her voice thundering through the darkness with all the authority and command she could muster. "In the name of the Sungod, show yourse-- Tanner?" The wind flew from her sails as her eyes adjusted enough to make out the gnome. "By Pelor's Light, what is going on here?"

Taern rushed forward, ignoring the small warrior inside of her that cried for caution, that these might be enemies with friendly faces, and fell to her knees by the gnome in a loud squeal of armor. Off came her gauntlets, weapons and shield discarded on the ground as she poked and probed at the little gnome. "Thin," she murmured, finally sitting back on her heels once she was satisfied he was all right. She suddenly seemed to notice the new person standing beside her friend, and struggled to her feet, weapon in hand.

"What happened? Who is this?" Then, after a hesitation. "Where are the others?"

Tanner nearly fell over as Taern poked him, He could see the lines that had formed on her face, the time away from him had did little good, but then his time away from her was just as harsh.

"Taern, what happened. How did you get here? I am lost," Tanner said with his eyes cast down. He finally looked up and gave Taern a hug, "Oh, how I have missed you. They ate .... the others, my friends are gone, This is Majere, we were slaves together. As for the rest, well Logan was sacrificed and ... I can't talk about it." Tanner said with sad eyes.

He slowly went to the pile, lifting off the box and shifting through the items, he grabbed his belongings and put them on.

William came over to Taern and gave her his nose.

'How did I get here? I caused this...My friend, I doomed you.' Taern's face froze, torn between horror and elation that it truly was Tanner. She felt bile rise in the back of her throat, and shadows that hadn't haunted her for many years reared their ugly heads in her eyes. Her hands mechanically clasped the gnome to her as her mind reeled in shock. Eaten? There were no words for the emotions that forced themselves through her head.

"I am lost too, my friend," she said hoarsely, and her eyes searched the heavens for guidance...but found only darkness. The last words resonated in her mind. Logen, sacrificed. Sacrificed, when she had seen those eyes, the ones she hadn't known, but at the same time...had known all too well. 'I could have saved him...' She ground her teeth together, noticing only absently that Tanner was gone. A wet nose touched her hand, and she smiled down at William, but there was little mirth in it.

"This is Taine. Don't expect smiles or welcomes from him; he's rather bad at both. In fact, he'd probably prefer we didn't even acknowledge his presence, unless we do something to displease him." No, it was a well-known fact between the two of them that they just plain didn't get along, and she wasn't about to pull her punches now.

"Logen. What happened, Tanner? I need to know. I need to know because if what I think happened happened, I'm going back."

Nice to meet you too...Majere thought to himself as he was ignored by this woman...Taern was it?
He quickly gathered his things, and tried to remain steady. Tanner and Taern seemed not to notice, involved as they were in their conversation.
"Tanner, perhaps we should make for the hills" Majere said in his frail voice. He was fairly frail and bing imprisoned had done him or his poor health no favors.
"Remember what we were told, when night saves us, leave the realm with haste...I think perhaps we should go, and quickly"

The man with Taern, who was quite the opposite of her shining little nature, drew his short sword by instinct at the presence of the newcomers. Yet as Taern seemed to know of them, he switched his attention to the rumbling floor and the surroundings.

"Yeah, i'd suggest we keep the little inquisition, and whatever else you got in mind girl, for another time."

The rumbling gave into another wave, one larger, strong enough for the rocks on the floor to start vibrating.

"I don't know what happened with that little nuisance that was following us, but as far as am concerned at the moment, I don't care much."

He turned and started running toward the hills.

From behind, from the coast and the city that was left behind days ago, came a deep roar, one that all of you recognized through the trembling shake that took over all your limbs, making the rumbling ground a detail.

As for the adept observer, once Tanner and Majere took their stuff, the little box which Taern recognized too well, stood out on the shaking ground...

And the roar came again, from miles away, but yet so close, too close.

Everyone around her seemed intent on running away, but Taern paused, riveted defiantly in place, staring towards the direction where that bestial roar challenged her. The ground shook her, but could she truly run from this without compromising herself? Even standing there, she knew the answer. No matter how rebelliously she raised her chin or shook her fist at the wind, the facts were that that roar terrified her all the way down to the tips of her toes in her boots. They could not face this...not yet.

She forced her limbs to work, sliding her mace into the loop on her belt and deftly fastening the shield on her back. The two newcomers were weak from their ordeal, and she wanted to be ready in case one of them fell. Running was one thing; she wouldn't abandon her new comrades to the deadly force behind them. "Let's go," she said quietly -- barely audible over the roaring and the sounds of the earth quaking.

She hesitated, staring at the box on the ground. She'd betrayed those who'd given it, and thus highly doubted any contact she'd have with that mysterious man would end with less than weapons drawn. Still, that box could be used, perhaps, as a bargaining chip.

No. These were the people who were responsible for Logen's death. Although their hands hadn't held the blade, she knew, knew in her heart that this was their fault. Her comrades, dead at their hands. Tanner, so traumatized he could hardly speak of his ordeal. Taern gritted her teeth and turned from the box, leaving it laying on the ground. The time for vengeance was later. Now, she needed to focus on escape...and doing her best to aid Tanner and Majere. "Come on. You two stay in front of me. I'll help you stay on your feet."

"Come on William, let's get to the hills. Majere is right we need to heed those words and get out of here." Tanner said finally looking around and seeing the stranger who came with Taern.

He started to run as fast as he could, following the fleeing figure of Majere.

At the sound of the roar, Majere had fled. he was not ready, not yet.
As he ran as fast his frail body and weak physique would allow, he glanced behind and say Tanner gaining on him. At least they had decided to follow.
He turned forward again and kept running towards the hills, his breathing becoming sharp and ragged. He couldn't keep running like this much longer...

Majere took his chance, being thoroughly out of breath, and climbed onto the pony's back. He held on for dear life as Tanner galloped onwards.

The group ran away towards the hills with all the breath they had left.

Just before their feet finally reached the hills, they realized that the ground had stopped shaking.

Why was everyone running in that direction, who knows. Was it the advice of an obviously evil child, or was it the sheer terror of what woke up behind them.

No matter what the group was now at the start of the hills, sitting around the small butts of land, taking their breath back.

It doesn't matter which one of you laid eyes on the nightmare you just escaped, but within seconds the eyes of the foursome were looking in the same direction.

Behind, where you could guess the city was, with the hints of towers remaing on the horizon from this mere twenty miles of distance, stood a form of astronomic proportions.

Even from this distance you could guess the form of a dragon, and this was the very fact that was scary. Beyond a dragon now sitting nearby the city, that dragon was huge enough, and huge is an understatement, to be fully visible at this distance. Now that you remember how the earlier roar seemed so near, a chill could only fill your limbs.

The groups choices now were slim. To either go back and give the new occupant a hearty hello, or take the road the other way...

And the other way didnt seem pleasent either. The bumps were slowly growing into larger and larger hills, with no signs of civilisation for at least as far as you could see.

However Taine simply crouched on the floor of the road once the group reached the top of the first bump. He pulled out a case and from it a very descriptive map, filled with explicit descriptions and scales and also multiple cryptic writings. He spread it on the dirty road and placed rocks on the corners to hold it down.

He pointed a point in the middle of nowhere, on the border of a brownish and a red area.

"This is us"

He then slid his finger downward toward the brownish peninsula and he just pointed with his thumb behind his shoulder, eyeing everyone. He nodded and pointed to what seemed to be the drawing of a town within the red area ahead. He looked to Taern.

"That's where we're going. Are these two following us? We sure could use an help now that missy bratty is no where to be seen"

He didn't seem to care his disappearance.

((OOC. For the record, Everyone got all their gears thats on their sheet. The little box was left behind in the chaos of escape. Its still there though if anyone dares going back. *grins wide*))

True to her word, Taern had stayed behind Tanner and Majere, however, at the sight of the gnome changing into a pony, she'd quickly decided that she needed to be able to keep up. And so, it should have been no great surprise for the others to find her astride a great beast of a horse, a beautiful stallion with pale golden hide and a mane the color of dawn's first rays. The noon sun seemed drawn to the horse, who stood regal even under the circumstances; he shone like a beacon of hope when all else is lost, but Taern had no eyes for him.

Her gaze was riveted on the horizon, and the growing look of horror and terror on her face was echoed in the nervous whicker from her steed. Eventually she slid from the saddle, unable to look away from the sight. Memories crashed over one another, and the woman hunched next to the stallion, finally sinking to one knee as if the weight of what she saw was simply too much to bear. One hand pressed down on the ground, supporting her, but she caught herself before her head lowered. No! Never again would she bow to one of those creatures!

The terror did not leave her face, but something came over it, perhaps an understanding that this was her cross to bear, or maybe something else entirely. Her mouth tightened grimly, and a nudge from her mount sent her climbing to her feet, facing the view with new resolve. It had to happen eventually, and she was glad that she'd faced her first since...then...in a situation where her weakness didn't mean immediate death.

Finally she turned to Taine, seeing his maps. Hopelessness threatened to overwhelm her, and her fingers went for her necklace but it was beneath her armor. Still, she smiled. Pelor was with her always. With him, she could accomplish anything.

"I've no real longing to go back," she lied. Apparently even she'd heard the lie in her own tone and sighed. "He has survived this long without my aid. Surely he can go longer. Besides, I doubt he even--" She shot Taine a suspicious look, as if he'd somehow goaded her into babbling, before changing the subject. "I do hope that Tanner and..." the name of the newcomer rolled from her tongue tentatively. "Majere?...will accompany us. They have seen enough hardship to last them a while."

She turned back to Majere. "We weren't properly introduced, but it's hard to be proper during what just happened. Taern, paladin of Pelor, may His light grow ever brighter."

"Greetings Paladin, I am Majere" He replied with a small bow.
"I will follow you, to wherever you go" He said to Taern and her companion.
Majere then turned to Tanner, who had carried him to safety.
"Thank you Tanner, will you accompany us?"
