Tanner knelt and waited for Majere to get off and then he changed back to himself. "Of course, I will join you, I can not allow any dragon to change the balance, I will fight until I am defeated or they are. You have my undying pledge." Tanner says for the first time looking at his three companions.

Taine frowned at Tanner's show of 'undying pledge', he gave a quick glance at Taern and then shrugged it off, back to the map
"Well am not sure what you two are good at, but whatever will help."
He looks behind his shoulder at the dread shadow hulking over the far away city.
"Am really not sure, but whatever, we can't go back. We were to reach the city" He points on the map. "And slowly talk people into resistance, just planting the seed of doubt that their lord may not be overpowerful. The army *was* supposed to be invading within weeks. If legends are true, it might take a little longer, but they'll still come. Hopefully"
He took back the map and rolled it back into the case.
"We still got roughly two days to get there, that is if we use the road, which I'd suggest. These lands are crawling with whatever you may call evil. Any questions?"
He wasn't looking at anyone, but forward, as if trying to piercing through the hills toward the town they were aiming for.

Taern squatted by the map, blowing out a sigh in a frustrated sounding whoosh as she studied it. "Not all that's wrong is evil, Tanner," she said absently, tracing the route with her eyes before following Taine's gaze. "This at least gives us more time. Worst case scenario, the army never shows, and we talk our way into trouble. Just means we'll have to be a little more careful, I suppose. It would be nice to be given enough time to convert the whole of the town, but I don't foresee that happening."
She stood in a creak of armor, stretching her back as she watched. "The road it is. No reason to call more attention than necessary."

"William and I will follow your lead Taern, for I know you are a woman of faith, I don't really care about evil or good, I know that the balance most be returned, and the dragons are the one right now that have the greatest effect of shifting it out of balance." Tanner said looking at William.

"I, too, will follow your lead Taern. I am a follower, not a leader"
Majere said to her, hoping they could be off soon.
"Should we leave, perhaps, we may as well get as many hours in as we can before sunset."

The group started walking down the road, which kept riding between the bumps in the landscape, which slowly started to turn into large hills. In the horizon, the group could guess that if they kept going straight for a week or so, they'd start entering mountainous terrain.
Behind them, from time to time, the roar could be heard. It sounded far away now however, much less reaching, like the sound of a mindless wave crashing on the shore.
Taine kept a few steps ahead of the group. He was at work on every step he made, Taern recognizing the observing outlook he had while she walked with him hours ago.
Minutes turned into a few hours and the sun slowly started to move down on their left from its zenith.
They were starting to feel the heat of the autumn sun starting to leave their skin when suddenly, Taine crouched on the road's floor, motioning behind to drop down. He drew his shortsword and started gazing at the top of the hills ahead, like an hawk seeking a prey.

"What's wrong Taine?" Majere whispered as he dropped down low.
He turned his gaze to follow Taine's, but couldn't see anything.
"If needs be, I have a spell to get you closer without being noticed quite so much"

Tanner looked at the hill and then to William, "Be on alert my friend, and I will be ready to provide some help if you should need it."

The smooth shick of Taine's sword caught Taern's attention more than the way he slunk closer to the ground. Her mace and shield came off her back, but she was not as adept at silence as he was. She crouched, muscles tense, waiting to either attack or be attacked.
She didn't speak, merely waited, knowing that there are things out there with far better ears than her own.

Taine heard, but didn't react, his empty palm laid on the dusty ground. He eventually whispered
"The roars must have had echoes beyond us." He turned to look at the others. "Heavy steps. Armored orcs or maybe ogres. Five of them, roughly. We can't let them see behind us, or we'll never be welcomed in town."
He looked at each of them in the eyes. "Alright. Let's move off the road and try to hide as best you can." He stared at Taern and lifted his eyes to the sky in a silent sigh. "Once they are all visible, we charge, unless they outnumber us two to one or worse."
He didn't wait for further comment. as you could yourselves start hearing the rattling of metal as a whisper from behind the back of the hill. Taine left the road and found a large enough rock to hid behind and soon even you couldn't see him.
===========================
The road is dusty and flat, about ten foot wide. It's more like a trail, it is not paved. It goes up and down but a lot more left and right, following the landscape between hils as they come.
Ahead of the group, some two-hundred feet away, the road starts turning to go around a tall hill. From beyond, the noises of what seems to be a party are coming your way, yet seems to still be quite afar.
On each sides of the road, the rocky hills are covered in a multitude of bumps and holes and large rocks, making the area a perfect field for ambushes.

"Come on William, let's get ready for battle, Now remember, we don't engage until we are attacked." Tanner says to William. They walk over near the rocks and Tanner activates his vanisher cloak and the pair disappear.

Majere smiled as Tanner disappeared. He ducked behind a suitable boulder and began to call his spells to mind.

Taern stood in the road a bit longer than the others, staring down at the bend where their foes were sure to appear. Yes, Taine was good, but was he really good enough to be able to sense motives from this great a distance? Could she be sure these foes really needed to be fought? Finally, she sighed, moving to the opposite side of the road than Majere and Taine. Hopefully if she was spotted, it would still give them an advantage. She wasn't particularly adept at hiding, but the rocks she crouched behind seemed to offer decent cover. She propped her mace against the rock and drew her bow, nocking an arrow and sighting for the enemies.
