This thread is meant for the consultations that take place in Dr Stettler's surgery......... wherever and whenever that surgery might be open. On the jump from GV to Frenzie Stettler has at least two appointments: Gryff and Morgan Egremont......... who knows what else may come up.

Once Stettler had slept long enough, feeling well and truly rested, he went for a quick swim. Once that was done, he grabbed a quick bite, before heading to the med bay, where he got ready to consult if needed. As he waited, he began slowly to fomulate a reply to Myra in his head.

It was not long after Stettler had returned to med bay that Gryff knocked timidly on the door. She had not slept well, she kept seeing Jack standing at the foot of the bed and snapped awake to find there was nothing there. She swore she could smell him too, the strong maleness she always associated with him. On doctors orders she had eaten or drank nothing, not that she could have if she tried she felt so nauseous.
She had been down to the engine room to check that the jump engine was still working correctly before going to see Stettler. She was nervous, the man himself made her nervous, he was so formal and she often felt internally he was judging her....never mind the fact that she faced a medical procedure...
"Erm..Doc its Gryff, I hope you are expecting me"

"Ah, Miss Jones. There you are, Stettler said upon Gryff's arrival, filing away the papers he had been sitting with. He smiled as she entered, despite the worry he felt upon seeing her; she didn't look very well. "Come and sit," he said, getting to his feet and getting the woman a glass of water.
"Here," he said, placing the glass in her hand, before sitting infront in her, urging her to take a sip from the cold water. "How are you doing, Miss Jones?" he asked after a while.

She looked at him nervously, was this some kind of a test "You told me not to eat or drink anything Doc and then you hand me a drink? I am a little confused". She put the glass down on the desk without touching it, "Not great doc, but is anyone who visits you. You don't normally come to a doctor if everything is ok now do you." She nibbled her lip before continuing, "You said you'd be able to pause the pregnancy for me today. You do remember that don't you after all the excitement of the rescue mission, where in my haste I nearly blew us all to kingdom come"

The doctor made a dismissive gesture with his hand, almost seeming disappointed at Gryff's suspicious tone.
"A glass of water at this point won't make much difference, and the ordeal on the custom's ship is not something I'm likely to forget any time soon; in fact, it is why I want you to get some fluids in you. If you'd rather skip the glass and go right to an I.V., we can do that."
Stettler went over to the sink and washed his hands, even though he had done so only minutes ago. He dried his hands, and drew a breath: "I heard back from my contact concerning Jack. The news does not exactly call for outright jubilation, but in the other hand, this is a case in hich no news is good news. As far as I can understand it, there was an attack on a G.V. detention facility in the wilds of the Southern Highlands. Several prisoners were freed, and quite a number of G.V. soldiers were killed. The good news is that there were no rebel casulties reported, even after several firefights that day. And if the G.V. had killed or caught anyone, I am pretty sure they would have reported, so as not so seem incompetent. According to my contact, the area is vast; if Jack got away from the DF forces, there's a very real chance that he and his compatriots got away clean. The lack of contact after, could be explained by a lack of communications equipment, or that they are worried that the DF could home in on any signal coming out of the area. "

"Ok, doc if you're sure" she picks the glass back up and sips at it, trying to ignore the somersault her stomach did. She hiccupped gingerly.
"I keep dreaming of Jack, seeing him stood at the end of my bed. I even smell him when I wake up....whats wrong with me am I losing it?" she starts to cry without even being aware of the tears running down her face. "I'd give up everything I owned if he was alright, anything, everything....Even if he didn't want me anymore, it would ease my heart to know he was safe."Almost on autopilot she goes on, "I can't eat as I feel sick all the time, I can't sleep and to be honest thats all I want to do. The bloody jump drive nearly blew up on me last night....this really isn't like me....not at all"

"The trouble is," Stettler said, almost feeling apologethic because he had to say what he did: "The procedure doesn't make you not pregnant - the foetus is still inside you, which means that the morning sickness and other sympthoms, like hormonal hyper production, will not necessarily go away. It should abate some, but not go away entirely."
He sat down and looked at her. "As for you seeing Jack... Mental health is not my field, so it's not for me to assess if you seeing Jack is more than wishful thinking. Do you actually, physically, see him..?"

"No doc, I dream I see him. I know he's not actually there although it feels very real. Its the fact my nose seems to smell his scent when I have woken up. Thats what disturbs me more...nasal hallucination eh?" Gryff sighed. "I know the procedure won't stop the symptoms of the pregnancy" she gives him a sad smile, "Gotta look on the bright side though, I'll lose those extra pounds that have piled on my hips".
She pauses and looks earnestly at the Doctor, "I think the symptoms are more caused by worry than the kid anyway. It's the not knowing....thats what really hurts. If I knew he was dead, it would devestate me but I can start to heal and get on with my life...and hers" she patted her abdomen. "But instead its like an open wound, everytime I wake up it tears open again, and never seems to get any smaller..."

Stettler nodded, although he wasn't sure what to make of Gryff's 'olfactory hallucinations'. "Perhaps... we should just get this underway," he said, getting to his feet and preparing the cot for Gryff to lie down. "If you would disrobe behind the screen and put on the robe, then lie down on the cot. We should be able to get this under way pretty soon," he cocnluded, sounding none too committed.

"I am sure I don't have anything you haven't seen before Doc," said gryff as she headed behind the screen. Despite her bravado her hands were shaking as she pulled off the boiler suit. She pulled the gown on shakily as she asked, "Is this gonna hurt Doc...its just I am a little allergic to pain...it hurts!" she laughs falsely at her own rubbish joke.
As she lay down her head was swimming, lack of fluids and sleep catching up with her. She felt all the blood draining to her feet, she took deep breaths trying to stop herself from fainting.

I think we shall have a medic roll from Dr Stettler......... 2d6 + skill level + Int mod (if you choose to surround Gryff with the full panoply of med computers, monitors and scanners you can add a further +1 for the expert software.
The one thing that can be said for the yacht's med-bay is that it is very pleasantly decorated and very comfortable; it is a long way from a Navy hospital ship!

"I'll do my best to make the procedure as painless as possible," Stettler said, readying the instruments and preparing the anastetics. "Final call, Miss Jones; you are certain you want this done?"

"Yes, Doc I do" said gryff quietly watching carefully as Stettler prepared the equipment. "Youand me do a similar job Doc, except you deal with body malfunction and me machines.." she mused in an attempt to make the strange atmosphere a little more comfortable for herself.

Stettler works with the minimum of fuss and without complications. In a matter of half an hour he has achieved perfectly what he set out to do: Gryff remains pregnant, but the pregnancy has ceased to advance and will not advance again until the procedure is undone under similar circumstances.
The embryo appears to be in good health and is now in a form of stasis which can, with some regular observation, be maintained indefinitely.
