Stettler looked at the flashing lights for a while before realising it was flashing. Or what it meant. When it dawned on him, he jumped into action, and punched the call through. "Comms incoming, sorry! Must be the jump that got to me," he said as he prepared for someone's impatient reply.

The first incoming call is from a the closer ship, identified as Arden Registered Trader (ART) 7130; the second call is from the Customs Cutter, Federation of Arden Custom Service Vessel (FACSV) 144.......

This is ART 7130, this is ART 7130, we have sensor, navigational and communications problems following an impact......... please standby......... we may require assistance........ repeat we may require assistance......

This is FACSV 'Spirit of Vigilance', we would like to inform you that there is a Federation Alert in force in this region of the Quare System, the Alert is Code 40 Amber, repeat Code 40 Amber. Are you receiving? Repeat, are you receiving?

"Spirit of Vigilance, we are receiving you. What is the nature of your alert, over?" After the initial 'cheekburning' from zoning out completely at such an important moment, Stettler's voice on the comms were calm and collected. Turning to the Marquis, he said: "Whatever it is, it is probably not good, and almost certainly related to the damage report from the ART. Meteroshower, maybe? They mentioned 'impact', rather than 'attack'..."

Imperium Registered Yacht, Code 40 Amber is a Federation of Arden security alert; if you do not have the relevant documentation we can transfer you the files. There will of course be an administrative fee set at the rate reserved for foreign registered vessels....... shall we proceed with this transaction?

Stettler made a quick search through the system to see if the necessary documentation was already at hand; if he didn't need to spend credits, he wouldn't. But if there was no such documentation onboard, he would have to pay up; they couldn't fly blind with no understanding of what was going on.

"Hang on, Vigilance; I'll doublecheck the comms unit here. Meanwhile, would you care to elaborate on the security alert? What exactly do we need to be on the lookout for? Terrorists, corsairs or foreign objects?"

Federation of Arden Legislative Order 30051 clearly states that foreign registered vessels must pay the required administrative fees in order to receive the relevant documentation...... shall I proceed with the transaction?

Whilst the Federation of Arden's legal system and the rather arcane Space Traffic Regulation System is mentioned both in Library Data and in the specific documentation for this mission, The Esperanza does not yet have a full copy of the documentation. This means that a list of the security alerts, which include quarantines, natural hazards, war, piracy and accident sites, is not immediately available without purchase. It seems to be assumed in the mission documents that at first port of call taxes are to be paid and such documents purchased.

"Sorry for sounding unprepared here, Vigilance. We were going to get all documentation at our first port of call. Of course, if you have the stuff easily available, I suppose we might as well get it from you. Go ahead, Vigilance. Proceed with transaction." Stettler was tempted to make a rude gesture at the mike, but stopped himself. It occured to him the alret couldn't be all that dangerous, since the burecrats on 'Spirit of Vigilance' chose to peddle lawbooks rather than inform them what was actually going on...

Does the master of your vessel hold a Federation of Arden bank account which contains at least 1250 credits?

The reply from the Customs Cutters comes through just as the trader ART 7130 comes within 10,000 km.........

Another sensor roll from Gryff please (2d6 + skill level + Int mod) and an Education roll from Shran (Turret) and Orthan (Bridge) as well (2d6 + Edu mod).

Arrago (NPC'd until Feyjarl decides to come back or not) is now installed in his turret and reports to the bridge that its weaponry (Double beam laser) is now armed.

The Marquis pats his pockets as if hunting for 'loose change',"I suppose we could scrape the cash together if everyone takes a pay cut. Please make the transaction. That trader is getting very close.."

(If one has beam lasers what is in the other turret?)
