Lucas smiled at the kid "I'll be fine, I don't have a gun, I have a crossbow though."

"Alright. Just don't be long." Shelley kept one hand on her lap and the other one on the section of log next to her, saving a seat for her white knight. The smell of food, beer, and burning wood filled her nostrils, and the noise of people around her seemed to come from everywhere at once. Normally this would be disorienting for her, but she was glad for it.

Laura found Lucas and took a seat on the other side of him, not wanting to interrupt whatever conversation he was having with the boy. In her hands she carried two steaming plates of a delicious smelling stew and two reasonably cold beers. "Hey, figured you'd want to eat something. Who's your friend here?" She eyed Ben, wondering what his interest was in Lucas. Then she wondered why she cared.

Lucas smiled when Laura came over, he ruffled Ben's hair and answered "This is Ben, He likes weapons and fighting apparently, I'm telling him why he shouldn't" his smile was a very rare genuine one, he had no idea why he had grown attached to Laura, they hadn't been wandering together for too long, but he had grown fond of the girl in a platonic sense -albeit with the mind to appreciate her qualities in the other.

"Ah. Maybe we can teach him to use his hands for something else. I know I could use help keeping these heaps they call cars going." Laura passed Lucas a plate of stew and a beer, taking a long drink from her own. "So, what do you figure? This place seems to be pretty safe, well, safer than anywhere else we've come across. You fancy on staying?"

"Wow" said Ben "she's pretty, is that your girlfriend"

Malcolm didn't take long to return with two bottled beers and a large plate filled with meat and potato. "I return with food" he stated dramatically

Lucas accepted the plate with a thanks and thought on Laura's question, he tapped a finger on his chin as he considered the idea. It did have merit... "'s better than scavenging I suppose" he finally answered, warming to the idea "Yeah in fact, why not? I got nothing out there, why not settle down here and do some good work, maybe start a family of my own."

Laura laughed at the idea of Lucas having a family. "Aye, and who are you going to talk into helping you raise a few brats? Don't know about you but it looks like most of the ladies here are taken. Same with the men I suppose." She eyed the blind girl sitting by herself on the other side of the fire. Where had her man gotten off to? "Fancy the blind girl? She seems to be pretty willing, from what I heard her say before."

Lucas snorted at both of them, to ben he just chuckled "No, just a friend" and to Laura he responded with a smile "Nah, blindy's guy has just returned, she already has her knight in bookish armour." he turned it into a grin "Maybe I'll ask you once we get settled in" his tone was slightly serious behind the laughter, Lucas watched her reaction with feigned disinterest, testing the waters so to speak.

"That's not the worst idea you've had. I have to warn you, I'm high maintenance." Laura slapped Lucas on the shoulder, laughing at her own joke. "High maintenance, get it? I haven't gotten to use that one in forever!"

Lucas chuckled back, rubbing his shoulder "There's a reason for that, jokes like that should never see the light of day." he mocked, smiling at the bad joke and in genuine gladness she seemed almost accepting of the idea.

"Go on" said Ben egging on Lucas "Snog her, you know she wants it"

"Lucas, you've been a bad role model." Laura batted her eyes at Ben, giving him her most vapid look that she could muster. "And who says I don't want to snog you? Maybe I like younger boys."

Lucas smiled at the game he acted shocked "Tut tut Laura, the pot calling the kettle black comes to mind"

"Oh, so you're saying I should snog you then? I'm always a bad role model." Laura shuffled closer to Lucas, putting her stew and beer on the ground. "Maybe we should let Ben here watch. Feel like giving him a lesson?"
