Ben looks with wider eyes, his face getting red but he makes no effort to move.

A thin young woman squats beside Janet and stares into the fire, "Can you hear the screams too?" she whispers.

"Ah, my brave hunter returns!" Shelley sniffed, a smile coming to her face. "It smells lovely. I don't know about you, but I'm starved." Shelley reached out with her hands, feeling for the plate and then placing it in her lap. "You brought beer too? I haven't had that in a very long time. Which brand is it?"

Lucas put down his stew and replied "Wouldn't be the worst idea you've had." he smiled at laura and turned to quickly wink at Ben "Pay careful attention Ben" before turning back.

Janet jerked round, startled out of her thoughts. The woman was a stranger, Janet didn't recall having seen her before. "What? Who are you? What do you know about me? It's none of your business" she cried. Was this how it would be? The woman would ask her what it was like, had she enjoyed it even. Did everyone know what had happened to her? Was she going to be the local freak that everyone pointed at and whispered about? Maybe the woman was the same as Adam, thought she deserved it. She paused, something about the woman's bearing touched her. She remembered that those monsters had been 'rewarded' often, had this girl received the same treatment? "Yes, I hear them" she mumbled staring at the ground and avoiding eye contact.

"Its some generic supermarket brand, probably tastes like crap but it was all I could find" Malcolm said grinning. "The plate was for us to share you know.."

"My names Rose" said the thin girl, "I know what happened to you, it happened to me too...more than once." She shivered, "I got fed up...I set the fire"

Janet's eyes widened in shock. "You set the fire? I thought it was that girl Keeley. You know she was almost banished from here or worse, why didn't she say if it wasn't her doing?". More than once? Janet could not begin to imagine what that must have been like, not knowing when it would happen again but knowing that at some time it would. Just once had almost been enough to finish her. "How did you stand it" she whispered.

"Keeley is my partner, she wanted to protect me. How did I stand it...I didn't" she slid up her sleeve to show row after row of healing slices in her arm. She laughed bitterly, "what use is a lesbian in the new world order...can't even have babies" she said in a passable impression of Chris. "Just wanted you to know, you're not alone and those dead bastards...well they are just that dead and gone. Best way to deal is find someone to love and who loves you" Her eyes are blank as she mutters "having someone to hold keeps the dreams at bay"

Janet looked at the cuts, her expression a mix of shock, horror and sympathy. She didn't know what to say to Rose, she knew that this kind of thing went on, self harming was the professional label, but it was not a thing that would ever have intruded into her safe, protected little world. It was something that featured in documentaries, usually focused on women in prison or mental institutions. Janet had felt a distanced sympathy but always tended to dismiss it as attention seeking drug addicts. Only now did she understand the pain and anguish that went with it. "My fiance is dead" she mumbled twisting the engagement ring she still wore around on her finger. She had accepted Chris's explanation that he had no part in Don's death, but in light of what he had turned out to be? She would always wonder. And who would she find to replace him? Adam? Even if he recovered Janet was not sure he could overcome his prejudice enough to resume their budding relationship and everyone else she knew was already committed to someone. The bottom line was that she didn't know if she could ever tolerate a man near her again. "I don't see much chance of that happening" she said morosely. "Who is going to want spoiled goods". Adam had seemed to think she had deserved her treatment, had wanted it even. What if other men thought the same? Even though Janet knew it was not so, she still felt soiled, dirty. She didn't think she would ever be able to scrub the stink of them from her.

"This is a new world," said Rose her eyes never leaving the fire, "people aren't going to expect pure white virgins...not gonna happen. Sorry about your fiance...was it the plague? I didn't find Keeley until after the plague....she saved me"

"Well, you had better dig in. I think I've already got a head start." Shelley placed the plate in her lap, enticing Malcolm to come and fetch some of the food for himself.

"No, he..." Janet paused. She didn't need to burden this girl with all her troubles. "We lived in Portsmouth" she continued. "I came up here to find him after the plague, he'd been working here. He was murdered before he got to know I was here. I know people won't be expecting virgins" she continued changing the subject swiftly. "That would have been pretty unlikely at my age even before all this. I just meant that there's a difference between experience and.. and.. well I don't have to spell it out".

Laura gave Lucas an impish smile as he turned back towards her. "Well, what are you waiting for college boy? Pucker up."

Lucas returned the smile, he put one hand on Laura's shoulder and pulled her in, turning his head slightly and closing his eyes halfway.

Laura smiled, grabbed the sides of Lucas' head, and pulled him in for the mother of all snogs. She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around his head, keeping him in her embrace.

Lucas let himself be pulled in and wrapped his arms round her in turn, one at the shoulders and one seeing how far he could push his luck, all the way to the base of her spine. His thoughts had gone sluggish and scattered, why plan anything for a while? he could just lose himself in the moment.
